Dish sizes for BBC/ITV in Europe

In the Low Countries and most of France, you will be able to get all channels with just a small domestic minidish. However, because they transmit on the narrow-beam 2D satellite, the BBC and ITV require progressively larger dish sizes as you travel away from the UK. This page is my attempt to build a database of BBC/ITV reception around Europe. It is specifically aimed at caravanners and motorhomers and therefore has to take into account how realistic it is to carry a large dish. I know that some people can carry much larger dishes than others but I would think that even the most dedicated television addicts are unlikely to carry dishes larger than 1.5m diameter! So that's the limit on this page.

If you are prepared to carry a larger dish you'll find more comprehensive information on www.astra2d.com, a website created by an expat to help others in the same situation as himself, and which doesn't carry an upper limit on dish size.

The dish sizes shown on the map at the bottom of this page should be OK, though bad weather might affect them. It's possible you might get away with a smaller dish and if you do, please tell me. Obviously I rely on other people to supply the raw data for this page so if you can add your own experiences to it, I would be very grateful. My email address is here. Contributors will of course be credited.

I live about 30 miles NE of Bordeaux and receive Sky on a 60cm dish. I had not realised that ITV was on 2D but we have no reception problems other than in heavy rain.

Cannes (Frank T.)
I can confirm that a 60cm perforated dish with a universal LNB picked up BBC1, 2, ITV, Channel 4 & Five when camping at Cannes and Fréjus in Sept and Oct 2003.

Carpentras, Provence (Yours truly)
Panasonic TU-DSB31
Sky zone 2 oval dish
All channels received. Some regions of BBC1 /ITV1 broke up in heavy rain but others were unaffected so we could simply switch to them instead.

Excénevex, on Lake Geneva (Sophie Lichfield)
We have excellent reception on all channels just with a standard perforated mini-dish. The only times we have problems is in heavy rain when the picture pixelates and freezes.

Cambridge 0.6dB LNB

Sky, Channel 4 & 5. No BBC, no ITV.

Milan. (Chris Harper)
For your info, we can receive BBC, ITV, etc, using a 1.1m parabola in Milan, Italy. Gets a bit interrupted under extreme weather conditions, but reception is usually very good.

Milan. (Graham Roach)
15 minutes east of Milan Using 1meter dish, BSkyB Pace 2200 box and freeview card. After VERY careful tweaking and numerous adjustments, I now get perfect viewing of all standard channels (BBC,ITV, 4 and 5) plus ALL the other digital channels allowed by the card. Signal strength is about 55-60% for the BBC channels and other Vertical alignment and 70% for the other (Horizontal alignment) channels. So far everything is fine but not yet had extreme bad weather to put it fully to the test. MY foreign life has been made easier thanks to this website. :-)
There you go David, thanks again. Hope this information makes it to the site to help the next person like it did me. [There you go Graham, it did!]
Moniga del Garda (Russell Whiteley)
I have an 85ch dish and have 90% quality on the signal and about 70% strength. All BBC and ITV, C4, C5 etc are there loud and clear. Reception is ok in bad weather, but bad weather and night time together - and the BBC and ITV channels break up. Good weather and night time are OK.

Pisa/Lake Garda. (Maurice Squier)
85cm dish. Reception OK until Pisa, then 2D signals began to break up. Nothing at Florence just 50 miles to the east. Continuing north, BBC/ITV came back in at Lake Garda.

LUXEMBOURG.
Luxembourg. (Jason and Candida Catterall)
60cm dish
Pace digibox
Good reception on all channels.

PORTUGAL.
Estoril near Lisbon. (Tim Briggs-Mould)
All UK PSB channels - BBC, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five.

Standard 1m dish, although this was only needed to get Channel 4. BBC & ITV came in with a 90cm dish!
AP8-XT2 LNB
Panasonic DU30 digibox.

Skew angle approximately 20 degrees clockwise (looking towards the dish. It didn't have to be spot on but anything less than 10 degrees or more than 30 degrees and the signal went)
Lisbon. (Nikos Drakos)
I bought my kit from AKI - it was a cheap Spanish Metronics system; €169 for the whole kit including an 80cm dish and an FTA receiver. The alignment for 2D is extremely sensitive - even a slight movement of the dish and it is gone. However it is possible to get 2D as far down as Lisbon with an 80cm dish (at least some of the time!) .

SPAIN.
Almería (Paul Coppinger)
1.2m dish
I took an old Grundig GDS200 with me to Almeria, plugged it in to a 1.2 metre channel master dish, and got every channel, this was after the local "know it all" told me I had wasted my time bringing it over ! I would add though that other people I have spoken to with regards the receiver type, have not been as fortunate with reception results. I initially could not receive all channels until I adjusted the LNB skew making small adjustments until I eventually was able to achieve good results.

Barcelona (Roland Clarke)
85cm dish
I'm receiving 2D signals perfectly 24/7 in Barcelona (city centre) with an old (solid) 85cm dish, a Panasonic DSB-45 digibox and an AP8-T2 Manhattan MTI LNB 0.6dB. The LNB makes all the difference; with a "normal" LNB I got no 2D signal at all even with a 1m dish.

Benicásin (Graham Jones)
Triax 110x100cm dish
Cambridge 0.7db LNB
Panasonic TU-DSB30 digibox
ALL BBC channels 24/7, plus ITV, ch4, ch5 plus all the usual others. People on the same site could often receive some of the BBCs + others with 80cm or 90cm dishes for varying parts of the day, but not all the time. They usually lost them just as peak evening viewing started and it was well and truly dark outside, just when they really wanted them.

Cartagena (John Marsh)
Panasonic TU-DSB31
95cm solid dish
Cambridge 0.6dB LNB

South beam only. No BBC, ITV, 4 or 5

Gijón, north coast (Kate Davies)
60cm dish
2D reception OK as far as here.
Madrid (Michael Bennett)
120cm dish
I got the BBC with my 1.2m dish but found the loss of signal in the evenings frustrating. I upgraded first to a 1.5m dish, then to a 1.8m Prodelin, which I now have. I found the Invacom Quad C120 (LNB) to be dramatically better than any of their other models, especially the single. (I had an email exchange with Invacom's technical director, in which he stated that it was something to do with the quad's more advanced power management.)
Málaga (Derrick Northrop)
130cm dish
0.7db LNB

2D reception generally OK but dish alignment and LNB skew are critical. Some BBC regions are better than others.

Málaga (John Marsh)
Panasonic TU-DSB31
95cm solid dish
Cambridge 0.6dB LNB

South beam channels plus BBC and ITV. No Channel 4 or Five.

Mallorca and Menorca (Peter Wrigley)
In Menorca and Mallorca you need a 1.2m dish and a 0.3db LNB and a low signal skybox to receive ITV1. You can get a 0.3db LNB for £70 from Brymar.co.uk. This cures all the reception problems.
Pals in the Baix Emporda region of Catalonia - on the coast, about 50 miles south of the French border and 100 miles north of Barcelona.
78cm dish. Full reception of all Sky and UK PSB channels.
Peñíscola
1.1m dish
Panasonic DSB30

All 2D channels 24x7

San Sebastián (Nadia, surname not given)
60cm dish
Panasonic DSB40

Ive just had my digibox installed with a 60cm dish and I can watch all the Free-to-air channels perfectly including all the BBC channels (no FTV card so no encrypted channels)

Santander and Haro (Robert Jervis)
80x70cm dish
All 2D channels 24x7

SWITZERLAND.
Geneva. (Geoff Burns)
Zone 2 (60cm oval) dish. Full reception of all UK channels.
Lausanne. (Melvin Wood)
I would like to tell you that I live in Lausanne, Switzerland. On moving here last year I took my Sky kit with me, the standard zone 2 dish with Sony digibox and it works very well. I got a handyman to bolt the dish to the wall for me and last winter I had a small amount of break-up of the 2D channels in the worst weather but then I fiddled with the dish position and have had perfect reception ever since. Remains to be seen if snowstorms this winter spoil things; if so I guess a bigger dish will be the only answer. In the meantime, the standard equipment is doing fine.
Zurich. (Jürg M Hummel)
Arcon Sweety 43cm dish (claims to have a performance equivalent to a 55-60cm standard dish)
Astra 2D OK in all but the worst weather.
Zurich. ('Fluffy Bunny')
Zone 2 domestic oval dish (60cm)
Pace DS430N digibox
Perfect reception of all channels even in snow showers.
Zurich, about 20 miles NE. (W.F.Ruttiman)
I use a 60 x 80 cm Visiosat dish with a better than 0.3 db LNB as recommended by a well known satellite specialist here in Zurich. I can receive all digital free-to-air programmes transmitted from the Astra cluster, in particular those of the BBC.
